My check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer and he said that the Oxygen sensor and the Mass Air Flow sensor needed replacing. $900 for the parts and $300 for labor to install. Needless to say, I'm not weathly enough to pay him until I first learn if I can replace these myself. The O2 sensor is located on the catalytic converter, right? Where is the mass air flow located? Any special tools required? He reset the light and it seems to run fine without these new parts just now.

I'm not too sure about exactly where your oxygen sensor is, but in most cases it is installed very near, if not on, the exhaust manifold where it will be heated to high temperatures by the exhaust gasses. It looks a little bit like a spark plug with a wire coming off the top. It pretty much is removed and installed like one too. Oxygen sensors are generally not that expensive (around $50). First, I would make sure that the electrical connection to the oxygen sensor is sound.
The mass airflow sensor is installed between the air filter and the intake manifold. Again, I'm not sure exactly where yours is but, by definition, it measures the total amount of air entering the engine. Did the dealer mention specific failure codes for each component? |

On your car the O2 sensor in the rear of the exhaust manifold at top of engine. Connection is just behind first firewall. On cars with over 60k miles replacement is a good idea. Failure of air flow sensor housing on this model is rare.

$1200 to fix???!!!!!!!
Sounds like the O2 sensor takes three minutes and how could the mass-flow take almost three hours? Is this a MBZ tech? MB DOC care to reply? $900 for parts????? That would mean what, $850 for the mass flow SENSOR? Somebody enlighten me, pls. Matt |

M.B. flat rate for O2 sensor is .7 hrs Includes testing. For the air flow housing the rate is 1.8 hrs. Testing time is upto local dealer, so is the price of parts! So 2.5 hrs of labor & test time. How much did they quote for parts?
