My top is stuck!

After a long (4 years plus!) search, I finally got a 'Benz, a nice little '85 380SL. The fellow I bought it from took the hard top off 7 years ago when he purchased it from the original owner (who apparently never had it off) and yesterday was the first time he had ever put it on. I don't think we got it on right because there is about a 3/8th" gap against the rear deck when it is locked down. When attempting to remove it after getting home, following the instruction manual to the letter, all appeared to go well until when lifting it, the rear (center) locking pin seems to be caught. It lifts out about 1/4"-1/2", and is loose (wiggles around nicely) but will not let go. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sorry all, I just used the search, and found Steve's well written explanation, I well try that before seeking further help.

By the way, the 3/8" gap is normal.

As long as the gap is between the chrome trim and the body of the car. There's a rubber seal that should be making contact.
