Need help with front end clunk
 

ok guys,

this one has the dealer baffled. My 95 S420 has developed a loud "thunk" when descending very slowly down a 30 degree or so slope. We live on a steep hill and each morning when I descend down the hill practically at a creep I get the thunk and it feels like the car lunges forward slightly. Are there any suspension components that could wear and cause this type of problem? I do not believe the brakes have anything to do with it. This phenomenom occurs both when driving forward and backward down the hill.

Any ideas?????

It certainly sounds like something is wrong with your suspension. Have you found out where this is coming from, the front setup, the back setup, under the front bonnet/hood or from the back boot? Have the car jacked up and probe around to see if something's come off their normal position, loose, broken off, damaged or what? An experienced tech should be able to find it quickly. Could it be something in the car thats running loose when the car is inclined? Maybe some of your suspension parts have had their day and something is in need of replacement. Just my 2cents worth!

The noise is definitely coming from the front of the car. I think the dealer is just not looking hard enough. I will push them a little harder when I am in on Friday.

Check the front Upper and lower control arm bushings.
They tend to crack and tear on W140 s class.
causing the control arms to thunk and shift around when braking.
I would look there. The sway bar end links use little ball-joints
that wear out too. That can be pretty noisy too.
