Sunroof "Booming" noise
First time the weather has been good enough to open the sunroof since I had my new E320CDi Wagon last September.
Starting at about 20mph and becoming worse as i go faster, I get a "booming" noise that oscillates at an increasing frequency. Actually get painful at 40 + mph. If I partly close the sunroof the intensity falls. If I slightly open my window it goes away. Anyone else suffer from this problem ??? Regards Mike |

Does your car have a wind deflector that pops up when your roof is opened? Check to see that there is one and that it is working properly. Sometimes they get stuck. If the roof is opened enough to have the buffeting occur you should also be able to lift it up. Obviously, don't force anything. Keep us posted, Haasman

That's what always work for me as well daddio. I'd try that Mike - the extra venting gives that bouncing air somewhere to go.
Interesting though that a W210 exhibits that behaviour. I'd expect it from my W115, but the W124 actually buffets very little even at freeway speeds.... Regards, - Ryan

The ML has the same issue. I found a feature that I had no idea existed that aids in the problem that you might try. If I tap the sunroof button in the rearward direction, it opens to about 3/4 automatically. The buffeting is eliminated in this position. If I open it all the way with no windows down, the air rolling over it creates the very low whump whump whump noise at incredible levels.

The aftermarket air deflectors cure this problem nicely!
EVERY car/truck/suv I have ever owned that had a sunroof had that wind buffeting problem! I will contend that the ML seems to be worse than the others. But I bought an aftermarket air deflector and it not only cured the buffeting, but reduced wind noise considerably! I can actually maintain a normal conversation at 65 mph with the sunroof open without yelling!
