This morning while driving on Interstate 70 going down a slight grade the cruise control on this 89 420 disengaged and then the engine stalled. I coasted to a stop on the shoulder and restarted the engine which started immediately and I finished my trip without further event. Of interest is that I did not shut off the key while coasting to prevent steering lock. When on the shoulder upon shutting off the key I would swear that the gas pedal snapped back to the idle position. Could this be possible? It all happened so fast, but I do remember that the throttle position meter on the dash was all the way to the right. I don't know if that is the normal position or not in this situation as I have described it. It seems as if the cruise disengaged, the engine stalled, but all this time the gas may have been to the floor trying to bring the car back to the pre-set speed, however, without any power to do it. Any help is appreciated. Once again, this never happened before... hopefully never again.

This could have been the result of a faulty fuel pump relay. I have seen many flake out.

had the same thing happen to me couple of days ago it was the fuel pump relay
took it apart and found that the solder had seperated from the little relay inside the unit . just resoldered the relay to the circuit board and it runs fine i did call for a new one but the place i called didnt have one so i had to McGuiver it
my solder looks better than the factoy if i do say so myself :)
