Front suspension and steering component diagrams
Can anybody supply me with the front end suspension diagrams and steering component diagrams for my 1994 E320 wagon. I am trying to trouble shoot a 'thud' kind of noise when turning the steering wheel.

Wow, that's fast. Thanks. Yeah - slow speeds only and even just parked when I move the steering wheel quickly left and right the noise seems to come from the left side. There seems to be a slight delay when turning. Also a slight noise and feel when hitting certain types of bumps and holes. I think they are related.

Start with the suspension balljoints (#15 on drawing).
Symptoms match. 1) Jack up front of car, place jackstand under control arm, just in from balljoint, drop weight of car onto stand. 2) Grasp tire at 12 and 6oclock, and attempt to rock inwards and outwards. Play indicates bad suspension balljoint. 3) Grasp tire at 9 and 3 oclock, and attempt to rock inwards and outwards. Play indicates warn component in steering. Suspect Idler Arm bushings (#5 on drawing) as a common wear component in steering.

Thanks. I've had the idler arm bushing and control arm replaced very recently. Ball joints are good. I starting to think it is in the steering column or close to it. Can you list off all the parts by number on the diagram please as I am learning about this stuff as I go.
Thanks for your help. |

The 300E made a similiar sound and it turned out to be the steering damper (#12) in the pciture.
Keep us posted, Haasman

Folks have reported problems with play in the steering coupler (#23).
I have no play there at 200k, and I have not yet personally witnessed this problem on an assortment of other 124s. Excess play in the steering box is common, and can be adjusted out. This can make for a gentle 'thud' if you turn the wheel abruptly. The syptoms for either would be an unusual amount of free play in the steering before the steering linkage responds at all. That diagram came courtesy of ************************: Link They have nice pictures, and very pretty catalogs, but the prices are generally higher.
