S320 (1994) Shift Adjustment
 

My S320 selector switch which controls the shift from Drive to 4th gear is slightly out of adjustment and this requires me to pull the gear selector lever very hard to the left in order to change into 4th. I think this could be fixed by slightly moving the gear selector switch under the slotted gate, but I can't figure out how to get the slotted gate off. I can take off the outer trim piece fine, but I can't see how to remove the slotted gate, the shift indicator and the shutter. Can someone tell me how to get these parts off so I can get to the selector switch? PS: My shift pattern is P,R,N,D,4,3,2, with 4 being immediately to the left of D.

Loose Shafter Shutter
 

The shutter on my S500 came loose inside again. It has been replaced once by dealer. Can anyone tell me how to get into the shafter box?:p

Your shift linkage rod from the floor shift to the side of the gearbox sounds like it needs adjustment.
place car on hoist or ramps. put shifter in park.
loosen jamb screw or nut on shift rod.
verify linkage on gearbox in park. park pawl locks on.
retighten.
This can be done or checked in all gears.
fairly easy to do.
check your bushings in the linkage and inspect your trans / motor
mounts for collapse. they can cause this too.
