Trans 722.6 Dipstick
OK, guys, what am I doing wrong?
Car is 1996 S500 Coupe. Bought the trans fluid checking tool (a dipstick!) and the little pins that hold the cap on. Got the cap off OK. Manual says push the "tool" in until is stops. I did this but seems like the tool bottoms out in the pan before the tool is seated at the top of the tube. I pulled the tool out, the fluid level is way above the top of the black section where the level marks are. Car was stone cold. What am I doing wrong? Is the tool supposed to have a stop somewhere on it? Seems like its going in way too far. Help! Thanks, KenP |
it sticks out about a foot. check fluid level running in park after driving it a bit. the level should be between the hot and cold marks.

I'm just dumb...
Joe,
Thanks for your reply... of course, without the engine running, the fluid will show very high. Think I was just surprised to find the "dipstick" was so darn long.... figured I had to be doing something wrong... Regards, KenP |
Ken,
Technically it isn't a "dipstick" it is considered a "tool" since it is used on various models of Mercedes. I have found that with the engine cold the fluid level is in the "25 Deg. C" zone and with the engine fully warm the fluid level is in the "80 Deg. C" zone. From prior posts on this topic, Mercedes recommends checking the level at 80 Deg. C. |
