My car has developed a pulsing sound coming from the rear and I'm afraid that it is one of the wheel bearings.

I was wondering if replacing them is a DIY job and how it's done and what special tools required.

According to the manual lots of them are required, but I want to see if anyone did it on their own and if I could learn something before I try this.

My main concern is pulling the bearing out, and dissassembly in general.

Wheel bearings in 124/201 cars generally last the life of the car unless it seen a lot of water, snow, etc. 300-400Kmi is not unusual. The bearing is sealed and non-servicable. Replacement starts with removal of the axle halfshaft. Then the hub flange must be removed with the use of a 10 lb slide hammer. Can come right off or take 30 minutes of pounding. Then there is the press used to install the new bearing. Some have made do with creative use of custom tools, many just pay labor. Are you really sure the bearings is worn out? I had a very bad thumping in the rear that turned out to be in part caused by a bad tire.

No to be honest I don't think it's the bearing etither, but I'm also quite sure it's not a tire.

One of my rear brake discs seems to be touching the brake pad while freely rotating, but it does not seem to be causing this problem. It's slowly becoming louder and louder, at first I didn't even notice it at all, but now I'm starting to worry that the car might be not as safe as it should be.

I'm trying to figure out what could be causing this problem, but so far I don't know how to start looking at this issue.

I know I'd like to get it fixed.

It seemed to have started a bit after I got my flex discs replaced, I'm wondering if the problem is related or not. I'll have to investigate, but I know the noise is coming from the rear.
