Engine oil for diesel engines?

Dear friends,

Is it true that only engine oil (API CF4/CH4) designed specifically for diesel engines can be used in diesel engines. Can I use regular engine oil (for gasoline with API SL) TEMPORARILY in
a diesel engine without any harm (240D)?

Thank you very much for your info.

Best regards.

Eric

You can use any diesel rated (CX) oil without HARMING the engine. The universal grades such as CH4, however, are blended SPECIFICALLY for use in diesel engines. These oils have additional detergents and soot dispersal additives to deal with problems specific to diesel engines. There is no reason to use anything except universal grades.

I use Chevron Delo 400 in everything I own except my new C Class in which I'm sticking with the factory synthetic. The additional additives help my gas engines, everything from pickup to lawn mowers, stay clean as a whistle inside.

Good luck,

Oil For Diesel

Hello Eric.
While I am new to this Board, I am not new to diesel's.
Larry hit the nail on the head! Chevron Delo 400 is the only oil I would ever put into a diesel engine. Highly detergent and most importantly, withstands fuel dilution. I also prefer it in single grade vis a vis multi-grade. Check your own'rs manual or service dept. for oil weight recommendations for your area. I don't recommend it for hi revving gasoline engines because it's anti foaming capabilities at hi rev's are not as good as other oils, e.g., Castrol GTX, etc.
