Fuel Pump Relay
A faulty fuel pump relay would make your car die as you have described.
Easy fix. On my car it's located next to the Overvoltage Protection Relay (it's a silver relay with a black or red top next to the control unit behind the battery - get it? ). It's a black rectangular relay that has the word "kickdown" printed on the label on top of it. Good luck. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |

Right.
Behind the battery, there is a plastic cover which you need to remove. From the photo, you can see the OVP is the relay with the red top (and 2 fuses located at the top of it under a flip cover). Your OVP may also be with a black top (with only 1 fuse on top) if it is the older model. The red one is an updated version. To the left of the OVP, you will find 2 black relays. The one closer to you is the Fuel Pump Relay. In my photo, it is the one located behind the wire loom with the words in white still clear (coz I just swapped it a couple of months ago). It's definitely the same in your car coz mine is also a 1.8 RHD. Hope it's helpful. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |

Taking it out...

In order to swap out the OVP, I removed the control module (the big black badass located to its right) which slides out toward you at a 45 degree angle. Just pull it out and put it to the side and you have access to the OVP. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |

Model and year? For your info, I swapped out the Fuel Pump Relay coz I had an intermittent stalling problem when braking to a stop from high speeds. Yes, it is the big black one with round pins, and is the one closer to the battery. It has the word "kickdown" printed on the label. They are known to go bad coz the original ones are not well sealed - moisture gets in... And by the way, my battery is also on the passenger's side. After the swap, the problem still existed for about 1 to 2 weeks. Then it disappeared for good. This was about 3 months ago and I have never had a stalling incident since. My car used to have a stall at least once a week, sometimes up to 2 times in one day. I was skeptical about solving my stalling problem by swapping the Fuel Pump Relay coz it didn't go away instantly. Now, I believe that was the fix. The part cost me about 85 Singapore Dollars (approx. USD50).Merc parts are cheap here... Good luck and let us know if you need more info. Azhari Babybenz 1991 190e 1.8 |
