W140 vs W220
Hi, I'm debating if I should keep my '98 S500 or should I get myself into a new one. As far as I know the new S series were giving a lot of problems and are ofter in service. Any recommendations ?

Peter, they're both fine cars, but they're completely different animals! Different looks, feel, ride, etc. I'm fortunate to have gotten LOTS of "seat time" in both models. In my opinion, the 220 is a much nicer car. That said, the 140's kinda' grow on you. If you like the feel of the 140, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the 220. One thing's for sure though. The 220 will out-manuever the 140, hands down. The only sure way to decide what to do is drive one. As far as problems are concerned, the 220's have had far fewer problems in the first three years of production than the 140's did. Good luck

I agree with ILUVMILS. See if you can drive one for a while.
Technology marches on. Is more technology better? Can't answer that for anyone but myself, but...I would love the S500's 5 speed electronic tranny and air suspension in my E500! BTW, other than having the A/C in the S upgraded to the later system under warranty (early builds had weak A/C), the S has been very reliable up to its current 43K miles. '94 E500 '00 S500 |
