W140 - shake when driving
My '93 S500 shakes when driving between 50mph and 80mph. It feels like out of balance wheels but I've had them balanced a couple of times. The whole car seems to shake - could it be the prop shaft {drive shaft in US}? out of balance. I haven't hit anything and by 100mph it seems ok again and it stays smooth and shake free at 140mph. Any ideas as its driving me crazy!

Does it shake when u brake? If so, it's prolly a warped disc.
You could be looking at some linkage failure, tie rods, center link, idler arm bushing? Jack up that wheel and have a buddy try to shake the wheel, then see what moves. good luck |

140 vib
I have had the problem since 94, the daler worked on it to reduce it by changing a lot of things. My dealer and a lot of people in the know tell me it is the car (92-94) I recently have been told to change the lower front bushings, and to get rid of the Michelins because they develop flat spots when sitting> the tires are probably the culprits if the vibration goes away after while. One of these days I might have the bushings changed, the motor mounts, rotors had no effect. The best result ever was to balance the tires, mount them on the car and then add more weight when spinning them on the car. There are not too many dealers that have the equipment, mine in the Chicago area did. I have ben told you could balance a brick, but will it be round

My 87 560 SEL had similar issues, smooth to 60mph, then shook like mad util 80mph, then smooth again to 100mph. I had newer Michelin X-One's on it. I had them balanced, and the shake moved to a different speed randge. Balanced again, and they were completely fine.
I agree with the other poster, certainly could be a Michelin thing. But I also have heard the pre-1995 W140's have some suspension problems from the factory. Some searches might reveal some more info about this. Good luck! -m

I just had new tires put on yesterday. This is the first time in the 5 years that I have owned the car that has not had ANY shake in it. I took it to a highend shop because I knew they would have the equipment to do the balance right. Previously, I would just take it to Discount Tires. This has REALLY paid off for me. I was in heaven!!!!

Youve probaly tried this already but have you tried rotating the front tires to the back? This way if it stops shaking you can rule out a suspension issue.
