Possible Xenon / HID upgrade ??
The cost of a kit to convert the Euro headlights to the HID/Xenon type is absolutely ridiculous.
I was wonder this............... I obviously have access to many different chassis xenon application that are OE for Benz. Would it be possible to use the ignitors, projectors, bulbs, etc from a later model MB & install them into the housing of the (W201) Euro's. The voltage needed was a concern, but I thought about using a relay to handle the extra uppppfff needed to fire them off. Any suggestions?

pat, it should work. i imagine the biggest hurdle is getting the hid in the w201 housing (h4). i have an h4 kit, so there's hope (it's just plastic anway).
i would not be worried about the voltage as the ballast will regulate the correct requirements to the bulb. so, to answer your question, YES! my friend is a service advisor at a local m-b shop. when they had lighting issues in their service bay, one of the techs grabbed car battery, wiring, ballast, and 1 hid bulb, and BAMMMMM. problem solved.

Pat- unless the lights you have are designed to focus the "arc" of an HID, IMHO, it's better to just use relayed H4 80/100 in Euro headlamps.
Also, if your headlamps are H4, you'll most likely lose your high-beam as well. I guess if you want the least load to your alternator, HID's are a way to go. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |
