confused!
Just replaced the intire thired brake lite assembly on my 89 420 sel. Now when i push the break pedel,i can see two small square lights between the bottom housing and the top reflector.I removed reflector and it is the same as the old one.I pushed reflector as far as it will go against the rear window but the light still comes through.Any ideas!

Mine does the same thing, not too bright or noticeable either but I just chalk it up to a little added peace of mind that I have at least one brake light that works (even with the "light minder"system).

Actually the third brake light is not monitored on many models so I guess the visual is good.

3rd brake light
What you bought is Euro version of 3rd brake light. Yes, EU versions come with those small openings. Rather nice feature.
