Help needed re Power Steering

Hi Guys & Gals,

I have a 1993 E220 W124. Recently I noticed that the steering will load up considerably at parking speed, and especially when attempting to turn steering when the car is stationery (engine running).

As my wife drives the car, she is finding it hard to park, esp in tight parking spaces.

Can it be the power steering pump that has failed? I have checked the fluid level and it is fine. Is there a way of testing the pump? If it is the pump, is it a DIY job?

Any help would be most appreciated :-)

Thanks!

Examine the steering shock. I have read posts that some have felt like they are filled with cement. You can remove one bolt to test it. Also you may have a partially seized ball joint of tie rod end.

Thanks Jdub,

I had the car hoisted up and when I move the wheels by hand from left to right, the steering shock seemed to extend and compress OK. I then checked the ball joins of the tie- rods and they move OK.

Is it possible that the power steering hose is clogged? Strange that when I rev up the engine, there's definitely more assistance. It feels like some blockage somewhere or the pump's had it.

????????
