'97 C230/722.6 tranny ATF level monitored?

Wondering whether the ATF level is monitored with the 722.6 transmission, and if a low fluid condition will trip some kind of indicator (like a check engine light)? There appears to be a slow leak coming from the passenger trans cooler line, as it passes through a grommet attached to the engine (and before it connects to the wire coiled hose). Can't tell from the color (black) whether it is ATF or engine oil from further up, but suspecting ATF at this point.

thanks,
-anthony

MB DOC, is there an easy, on board way to check the temp, or do you need a scanner?

Scan tool OR thermometer with 3ft probe.
Also an infrared temp gun can also get you close to the correct temp.

Thanks for the response MBDOC.

As an aside, those infrared temp guns were pretty neat the first time I saw one in action..!

Have you had the fluid changed. I have a 146000 on a 97 C and the trans has never been opened. Shifts and rides like the day it went into service. I would like to change the fluid but now I am afraid to fool around with it, because it runs so well.

Not exactly.. we are the second owner, picked up the car at the beginning of the year. According to the service records, it looks like the shifter housing seal/gasket/whatever (too lazy to pull out the records right now) was replaced at about 60,000 miles, and with it was about 6 quarts of new fluid. But, no new filter, so it "sort of" had a fluid change. I'm thinking will have the fluid/filter changed at the next major service, the consensus seems to be to do it around 100k mi, even on the "filled-for-life" trannys.
