I own a 300 SD 121K ..... Worn camshaft very loud tapping.. One lobe worn flat..
Is this job a do it youself type of job ??
I have a buddy with good tech skills and I plan on buying a W116 CD to guide us, any special tools needed besides valve wrenches..Any comments are e-mails or pictures or anything would be a help..I am in a money crunch with this car .

Thanks friends ......

Question,

Seeing as how Juan as conned me into being the tech on this job, and I've never done an MB chain, or cam before(many chevy's, and a few Detroit Diesel's) any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time
Peter Kalloday

I'm not sure about this specific engine, but I changed a chain on a diesel once by grinding off the side plate of a link, connecting the new chain temporarily with a master link, turning the motor to draw the chain through the maze of chain guides. After drawing the entire new chain through, I then removed the masterlink and used the tool to install the permanent masterlink.

I would think that if you're careful, you should be able to use this method while installing the new cam. You may have to carefully mark the chain position somehow, replace the cam in the same position, then draw the chain through.

Good Luck,

This is good advise Larry. One thing though. Be sure to get a new tensioner and reset the NEW one to detent #1 before istalling it. Install the new cam first marking the old gear and chain with paint so they go back in the same position. Then go in with the new chain.
