Question Relay problem - 560 SEL

I am the owner of a 560 SEL ’88. Now there is a big problem. It starts normally but after a minute or so the engine stops and it is not possible to start again. I have found that a solder connection in a relay – 002 545 16 05 – has been broken. When I have mended the soldering the engine starts normally but the same thing happens again very soon. The starter motor works normally and there is spark.
Does anyone know what functions that relay serves? Of course I should be very pleased if someone has a wiring diagram.

Best regards
Jörgen Engström

I COULD NOT FIND THAT PART NUMBER IN OUR SYSTEM. I WOULD REPLACE IT IF YOU FOUND ONE PROBLEM WITH IT BECAUSE IT MIGHT HAVE OTHER PROBLEMS YOU DON'T SEE. ON MY 89 300SEL I REPLACED ALL MY RELAYS AS WELL AS SENSORS, IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

That's the fuel pump relay. It has been superceded by part# A 003 545 01 05. That does not mean that your's needs replacing. Do a search on fuel pump relay. There's a way to jump two of the pins to run the fuel pump continuously.

Fuel pump relay

Jengst,
I had a similar problem, with my 500SEC.
I soldered the connection and it broke again.
It is important to bring up the heat in the joint
before you apply the solder. Otherwise, you are doing just what the factory did.
I did find a newer relay in a junkyard but it did the same thing.
I fixed them both and carry a spare in the glove box. So far, I haven't needed the second one. Going on 15 months.
I understand that new ones are $154.
Good luck, JF

i have been reading these posts and i am confused on the soldering part of the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump relay as I understand is the one next to the climate control relay by the firewall; ( next to the climatecontrol relay is the OVP). My 91 560 SEL fuel pump relay has male connectors and it is sealed. How can one figure out what to re-solder?...what am i missing?

emmydotnet,
The fuel pump relay, on my '85, is located in the fuse box.
The relay itself, looks like a 1/2 pack of cigarettes.
It is sealed, but you can easily open it.
At the male pin end, you'll find 2 solenoids.
The small one is overspeed.
The larger is what you want. Roll the unit over, and check the solder joints on the solenoid supports. These are the grounds to the circuit. If you can gently wiggle the support, you'll see the broken solder joint. I think the factory did a "cold solder". Anyway, solder it. Be careful not to over heat the circuit board.
Simple job.
Good Luck, John F.

Fuel Pump Relay

My 1991 W126 has a similar problem except it restarts easily (usually) after stalling at any and all speeds fast and slow. Somehow at high speed, it manages to regain power when I floor the accelerator. At low speed, I usually need to turn the ignition and restart. From all the searches on these boards, it seems that the most popular explanations are Fuel Pump, Fuel Pump Sensor, Crank Sensor, Wires, Ignition Coil. I'm going to guess fuel pump sensor and wires (the cheapest remedies to start off with)

Where's the fuel pump sensor on the 1991 420? Is it on the firewall like that of the 560SEL? Thanks for your input.

flixbiz:
you maybe referring to the fuel pump relay which is located on the firewall on the 560SEL. I believe it is the same for the 420SEL.

Any luck on your engine stalling problem? I have exactly the same problem in addition to a rough idle.

I will try and open-up the fuel pump relay this weekend for starters and see whether i have a solder problem.

I will also open up the injector lines to see if I have clogged-up problems

jengst
Do you have any tips in opening up the sealed relay casing? I am afraid I might mess it up. I sure do not want to damage the casing. What did you sue to reseal it after repair?

I cleaned the throttle body with spray gunk remover, changed the air filter and plugs. So far, I've driven about 100 miles without a stall. Just as a precaution, I ordered the fuel pump relay from Euromeister for $123 (including shipping). I'll post again in a couple of weeks to let you know if any of this solved the problem. Good luck!

It happened to my '88 560sel. It happened once awhile at the beginning. Then in one week, it stalled progressively more frequently. I ended up have it towed because it wouldn't not go far enough before it stalled again.

Don't fool around with it. When engine stalled, you lost power steering and brake. It's very dangerous if you lose these while you are on a winding road.

Had the fuel pump relay replaced and it is running fine.
