Question Fault Codes....

First of all, I have researched extensively on the various threads and have tried a few of the fixes mentioned. Today I go over what I have here and head for the Benz to see what may be the actual fix needed. I pulled up a code off of the connector next to the battery, the one with the button and LED, and get 15 flashes. I do it again to make sure I counted correctly. Did some more looking on here and for my car/engine 15 flashes is "not assigned". I did the reset and the CE light is now off. Any ideas from anyone as to what may have caused this to happen? It's a '91 300SE 3.0 w/193,000 well taken care of miles. No problems with driveability, no increase in fuel consumption, smooth idle, plenty of power when needed. The day the CE light came on I was just tootling down the highway at about 50 MPH and hit a slight dip in the road, nothing major just enough to let you know that it was there, and on it came. I had been on the road already for about 30 miles and like I said it was and continues to run fine.

I want to take a moment here to thank everyone who posts here with tips and suggestions, the Webmaster, and Moderators, without you many of us would be pulling our hair out (and I am missing some on top already) trying to figure out these fine automobiles we love so much. I met the Webmaster (can't remember his webhandle) and Benzmac at their shop, very nice guys.

Fault code # 15 is assigned. Also, your 300 SE has a 3.2 liter engine, not 3.0.

1 No faults.
2 Oxygen sensor inoperative.
3 Lambda control inoperative.
4 Air injection inoperative.
5 EGR inoperative.
6 Idle speed control inoperative.
7 Ignition system failure.
8 Coolant temp sensor-open or short circuit.
9 Intake air temp sensor-open or short circuit.
10 Voltage at Air Mass sensor too high or low.
11 TN (RPM) signal defective.
12 Oxygen sensor heater open or short circuit.
13 Cam position sensor signal from-EZL/AKR ign. control unit defective.
14 Intake manifold pressure at start too low.
15 Full throttle Info defective.
16 Idle speed info defective.
17 CAN Data exchange-Malfunction between control units.
18 Adjustable camshaft timing solenoid-open or short circuit.
19 Fuel injectors-open or short circuit or Emission control system adaptation at limit.
20 Speed signal missing.
21 Purge switchover valve-open or shorted.
22 cam position sensor signal defective.
23 Intake manifold pressure w/ engine running too low.
24 Starter ring gear segments defective.
25 Knock sensors.
26 Upshift delay switch over valve-open or shorted.
27 Coolant temp sensor deviation between sensor ciruits 1 & 2.
28 Coolant temp Sensor.

Oooops. I thought his 91 300SE was a W140 chassis.

Exactly. When he said he had the built-in LED/SW, I immediately assumed it was a W140 chassis. Go figure....

Hmmmmm, I wonder do I have another of the famous oddball vehicles that only one or two were made, finishing out the production run with whatever was on hand I seem to find a lot of them. Everything I have found on this car points to a W126 chassis. It does say somewhere that the engine is a 3.0 (I think I cracked the code about the different models 300 3.0, 320 3.2 etc), and it does have the LED with the button under the hood. Since I reset the CE light it hasn't come back on.....yet, drove about 100 miles in three trips so far. Still, I'm curious as to why the light came on and what the 15 flash code means. Could it just be a computer brain cramp?

Thanks for the input guys.

I bow to the two experts here . . .

but maybe you missed a count: so it's the EGR valve??? 193k is in the ballpark for that code.

If it's 'real', then be assured that it'll will come back!

Bruce,

I just looked in my MB DTC Reference Guide and code 15 is indeed not used. I am inclined to agree with the previous poster that maybe the led blinking was miscounted and code 16 is the EGR. My 190E2.6 (103 motor & 130,000 mi) will sometimes set a 16 and 11 (air pump). Although I do not have a CE light, I pull codes every so often to see how the car is doing.

Paul, that's not anything like mine, except for the star and the 300SE. I have a square fit boot lid, the back-up lights are made into the taillights(which come almost to the license mount), a slight overhang of the lid over the license plate, the lock is under this overhang. I have a pic of one like it (view from the R/F) and will attempt to post it with this message (I hope all the shrinking didn't mess up the image)

Thumbs up

Rolfe3 and Jim, yup, the code came back today and I guess I did mis-count the flashes (oops). EGR fault is what you said and what I remember being the possible problem so when the motor cools down I'm going to take the pipe down that runs from the EGR over to where it ends up and clean it out (read about plugged line while researching ) Thanks again.

Paul, I don't know what happened to your response with the pic, one minute it was there, then POOF, gone. What you had pictured is not at all like my car. Still wondering if I have an oddball car with the LED/reset plug Thanks again to you as well. (still haven't figured out how to put a pic in here)

Bruce,

I deleted my post to save some bandwidth with that big picture. You don't have an oddball car, the 300SE did indeed change from the 126 body to 140 from '91 to '92.

I learned this while browsing Ebay motors and in fact saw a couple of '91 SE's for sale, which answered my question that I had posed.

Good Luck
