Just p/u a 12 oz. can of r-12 at pep-boys 29.95/can.I just want to make sure i found the correct service valve.Is it just to the left of the ABS unit under the power steering hose?Also how many oz's does this system hold? 89 420 sel.

You can't just squirt in in there, you know. There are two fittings, high and low. If you put it in the wrong one it is bad news. You also need the proper equipment to do it. I don't know how it's done, but wanted to give you some response before you made a mistake. Make sure you know what you're doing.

420 benz, you found R-12 at Pep Boys?? I gotta check out my local one tomorrow. Don't quote me on this one but I was talking to the youth minister where my kids go to evening church, he said he has been a heating and air man for 15 years, including cars and told me that the large hose is usually the low pressure side and the smaller diameter hose is the high side. But he also said it would be best to at least have a set of guages to hook up for the readings of the system. Personally, since I'm not familiar with A/C service (never had a car where one worked ) I'm going to look for one of those A/C services ads and then watch them like a hawk while they do their magic on my Benz.

420 Benz: Your description of the location of the low pressure side Schraeder valve sounds right, but to check yourself, find the sight glass (located in same general area, in the pit behind drivers headlamp assembly). the low pressure Schraeder valve is closest to that sight glass. The high pressure valve is tucked away, not as accessible. BUT, whether obtained from Pep Boys or elsewhere, I don't think R-!2 is that easy to come by in small cans any longer. Perhaps you meant "Freeze-12," which I know is in use in the Atlanta Area for arbout $15 a can. Is the sight glass showing bubbles?

I would highly recommend, for your own personal safety and the health of your a/c system, that you do some reading. You REALLY need to understand the fundamentals of refrigeration before doing this. You also need a manifold gauge set which is very inexpensive for R12 systems, about $30.

A good source for reading is the MACS manual that can be had from www.ackits.com.

As far as R12 at Pep Boys goes, there are MANY places where you can buy it as long as you have a 609 certificate.

For those who have 608/609 Certification and know how to service ACC. You can still get the "Real" R-12 from Dupont but you need to cross our southern border. You can bring up to 120 oz. across with proof of your certification card to the nice people on the US side of bridge. Cost runs $25 - 30 depending on how the exchange is going. I usually visit an auto-parts store in Matamaoros, Tamaulipas MX. Flying to Cancun is not going to work -DO NOT try to pack this in your check in baggage! I am sure it would cause some delays in your trip. One a/c service on your neighbors old R-12 car and he is pleased to give you $30 and the rest is "spoils"

And if you choose to cross the bridge at El Paso, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Laredo, McAllen; Brownsville, be forewarned that alot of the so-called "R-12" they are selling down there is really R134A.

There are legit suppliers for R-12 on ths side of the river.

I would just as soon by Freeze-12 for < $10 a can knowing it's 80% R134A as to drive down yonder for somebody's version of who knows what.

Sorry, there was some "unwritten" common sense in my post of crossing the border. One must assume that if you are buying R-12 you know what it is and how to use it. R-12 12 oz cans are different. By name brand DuPont SKU #2888211001 and it will be CCI2F2. I agree their are some scams on R-12 hence the saying buyer beware.

Thanks for all your help.By the way i do have the guages and the leak was in the service valve.I repaired the leak and added 12ozs of r-12 [at least thats what the can said] .I hope that is the only leak, time will tell.Thanks Again
