My 190 e 2.3 1987, seems to always blow cold air, it doesnt matter if i turn the heat on or not. Is that common? All the other vents seem to work fine. They follow the temperature settings when applied.

In my '86 it always did this for some reason too. Never bothered to try to figure out why or if it was working right...

Mine too. BUT, I think that vent is strictly outside air. I think in the summer when it's hot outside and you don't run the A/C you'll of course get hot air through it.

The only MB's designed to allow heat through the center vent are the 1990 & later SL & 1992 & later S-class.

Fresh air at fresh air temps - that's all you'll get.

Let me get this straight, pre 1992 mercedes vehicles will not be able to get heat through the center vents?

Wow, this sub standard climate control system just gets worse and worse!

Which center vent are we talking about? I know that the rear vent is blowing only cold air (dunno why...) but all others do heat... (85 500SEL & 86 560SEC EURO)

We are refering to the the vents that sits right in the center of the dash on a 190 e 2.3.
Its a first for me too,but thats the old benzo.

Hey guys I know exactly what you are going through. However I also have another problem ever since my ac stopped working. through the side vents I get hot air all the time with the climate control system totally off. I have to close the vents so that they won't blow hot air at me. It seems like they are just totally open to the outside air. I don't believe this was like that before.

Yep -- right there in the owner's manual (1986 190E 2.3-16V), "The center outlets are for non-heated air only".

I had the same problem as you i believe. With the AC on you get cold air in the middle and hot air at both the far left and right vents. Problem ended up being a split black vacuum hose located in the engine compartment. There is a little plastic connector with black hoses located on the driver side just below the windshield inside the engine compartment (at least that is where my hose was splitting). I fixed the leak by snipping the hose at the split and placing it back on the connector. Everything worked fine from there. My mechanic said that what your experiencing is usually a tell tale sign of vaccum leak. If you were getting hot air out of the middle vent as well then that would more tend to be problems with your climate control module. Hope that helps.

I have an 85 500sl (euro). It always flows hot air through the center outlets. The blower only comes on about once every two weeks. Thermostat seems to work as well as the off switch. Someone said auxiliary pump but, could it be the climate control module?

OI!!!!!!!

Listen up.

On my 450SLC the centre dashboard vents suppy fresh air....from the outside.

The side vents supply heater air as do the floor vents.

When the AC is on the fresh air inlet is closed off and recirculated air is fed to the blower mtr so cool air is cooled cooler!

Later models may differ but I think that standard may have followed through , if there have been changes ...other than the fresh or rec option.

Indeed. The centre dashboard vents supply outside fresh air, non-tempered.

And that's a great philosophy from older Mercedes. Because in the winter, driving in the middle of the night, on an isolated highway, I will have my heat blowing to my arms, legs and feet, while the cold outside air will keep me awake all the way of the trip by pointing the vents towards my face. I just reduce the amount of air coming in from the centre vent. Like wrapped in a warm blanket, perfect and the way it should be.
