Transmission flaring, different
 
Hey,

I've got a 1992 300D 2.5 Turbo 166k and my transmission is flaring mainly when warm. Doesn't really do it when cold. My 2-3 shift sometimes revs to 4000 before shifting, but other shifts add maybe 500 rpm when tranny is hot. It's been minimal until recently--getting weird to drive.

Anything to check for flaring when hot only?

I bought the K1 (or K2 whatever it was for the 2-3 shift) spring kit but my indy wouldn't install it. So I'm looking for a more troubleshooting and a more complete solution.

Some adjustments are possible
 
Check my web site - Cars - Technical - Transmission. While that job if for a 1983 300SD, your tranny s/b similar - though you may have a sliding metal tensioner in lieu of the Bowden cable - similar concept/adjustment.

You may have some luck by tightening the Bowden for earlier shifts and backing off the shift modulator at the tranny a sector or two counterclockwise. The first gets you earlier shifts, the second softens the increased harshness form the first adjustment.

No special tools needed unless you adjust the vacuum range also (reduce it in your case) which means you need a vac gauge, a rubber T connector and some vac hose - <$50 for the lot.

Your tranny is filled to the right level, no?

I recently had fluid and filter changed. Level shows full.

I heard the adjustments were different on my tranny vs earlier ones, but I will definately check out your web site.

PS: I take that back, I think my car has the 722.4 or .5 tranny in it....

To properly deal with control of that tranny you WIL have to get involved with the vaccum controls.

You may schmoose over the problem by making it shift real early with the cable adjustment, but the reason you are getting different shifts warm is that you have more foot it it cold giving greater modulator pressure due to less vacuum at similar power levels.
