Are engine flushes safe, i heard that they will clean sludge out of your engine. How often if any should you use a flush and what kind do u recomend?

What are you flushing, the cooling system or the lubrication system. What problem are you trying to fix?

I have not ever liked this idea, not because of the washing, but because of the disturbance of all of the settled debris.

Benzmac is right on the coin. There is no really effective way to "flush" the oil system. Change the oil frequently, maybe every 2,000 miles for about 10,000 miles and thereafter every 3,000, do the filter every other oil change. This should take care of any "flushing" that needs to be done. By adding those aftermarket engine "flushes", all you do is dump a can of solvent into your engine!! This is a real quick way to shorten the useful life of bearings, etc. Frequent oil changes (cheap insurance)..

There is some interesting information on this at http://www.bilstein.com/machines.html

Wow, where do you find one of those machines? I'll bet they cost a bundle. I checked with my local MB dealership. They didn't know about that and probably wouldn't recommend a procedure like that. They gave me the same advice, frequent oil changes..

We had the guy that was from Bilstein come by the shop and try to sell us on the "flush system" . I asked one simple question, "What will this machine do for MY CUSTOMERS?" His answer was "It can make YOU $80,000 per year" ???????? Did I miss something? I dismissed him and told him to have a good day and NOT to come back!!

I like you Benzmac. I'm glad you kicked him to the curb. Like we don't pay enough to get our cars serviced.
Thanks again Benzmac. |

I have a 300E with 161K miles on it, I have had it for 2 years now and since then replaces many parts, OEM specs.
My question is for you guys who changed to zynthetic, I usually change my oil and filter every 2500 miles, I have been using 20-50 castrol GTX. How does the zynthetic oil helps my engine? I have been told by my father (Rolls mechanic for life) that I won't do any good, and might just end up with licks. ------------------ 86' 300E 92' 190E 2.6 |

Oh boy, Champa, you're opening a HUGE can of worms with this one! You should check out the search feature on this site for info on synthetic oil (way more than you probably want to know!)
Best of luck, Nick |

Champa, Don't fix it if it ain't broke. An interval of 2500 miles should keep that engine slick for life. What parts are you replacing anyhow? Castrol is a great lube. Why all this fuss about synthetic anyhow?? It probably causes cancer in laboratory animals. Sometimes it pays to be "oil fashioned"

Put this in the "what it's worth department," but the local authorized Benz dealership here in VA Beach offers the Bilstein R-2000 service for $129.95; this price includes the cost of a new filter and oil. I guess somebody believes in its usefullness.

Before you try to clean up the oil you got to look at the mechanical condition of the engine. Does it blow blue smoke in the morning when you start it? Get a compression pressure test with written data from your mechanic and compare it to the makers specs for wear limits. If there is blowby your oil will always be black. Otherwise........change the oil more often and change the filter everytime. |

It sounds like this 129.95 for an engine flush is like selling a miracle cure to desperate people. If they would have changed their oil AND filter OFTEN, and preferably drain while the engine is hot, they would have NEVER needed this engine flush snake oil cure! If frequent and proper oil changes are done, there will never be the need for such scrubbing unless something happens causing extra filth, then it would be done AFTER the repair.
The main reason for frequent oil changes is that it is the only way to constantly keep the inside of your engine clean. If the engine has degraded to a point of needing work, cleaning the inside of the engine, which frequent oil and filter changes would have done, is closing the prison gates after all the prisoners have escaped. ------------------ Larry Bible '84 Euro 240D '88 300E 5 Speed Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles |
