Mercedes American & European models
I'm looking for Service manuals for Mercedes 220 E model 1993. Everywhere I looked for these manuals, I found that my car manual 220E is not covered in these manuals since it's European.
In one of my searches, someone said "American models are same as European with slight changes" and that you can use an American service manual for a European one. So, I have 2 questions: Is the above statement true? How do I know what is the American equivallent to my European model? many thanks |

The US never got a 4 cylinder in the W124 chassis.
The 300E 2.8 would be a similar chassis however the M111 engine came only in the C220 here. YES alot of the US manual is applicable to "euro" cars as well.

I found german manuals that were in english on ebay a long time ago. I'm sure you could probley find a Chiltons manual but as always they are very un clear.

On my 126, the manuals came in 2 volumes of chassis manuals and a separate manual just for the engine. Couldn't you just get the chassis manuals for your 124, but the engine manual from a C220? Of course a few small things might be a little different, but I bet essentially most things are the same.

Too add to what mbtjc suggested, Haynes publishes a W124 book that covers the 220E model. Between the US CDs and the Haynes manual, you should be pretty well covered... unless you have a transmission problem
Check www.haynes.co.uk and/or a UK bookstore like www.whsmith.co.uk. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

I don't know if they are officially out of print or not...I got mine at www.books4cars.com. They have a big selection of paper manuals. Personally, I would hate to have a CD-ROM manual. But we don't want to get into that debate....

So,if I get what you are saying, you suggest that I get an engine manual that covers the C220, and that would be the same as the engine manual for the European 220E which I have? And are the service manual CDs that bad? I mean i heard discussions about that, so I want to make sure through this forum. Many thanks to all of you |

cdroms
hi all
personally i don't have a problem with the cd. yes the pictures are a bit faint at times a few too dark for small details but all in all i've used the hell out of mine. don't get me wrong i also own every manual for the 126 and the 107 chassis. the ones i have never got to work properly is the EPC cd's. although stevefbl has given me some hope so when i get some time this weekend i'll try again. but please remember i am only talking about the 126 & 107 cd's. don't know anything about the others. tks craig

yjamous: As far as your question about the manual for the C220...well MB DOC said that it is the same M111 motor in both. So since I am not a tech or anything, I won't guarantee anything. It only seems to make sense though, I think most people will agree. I think you should be fine though. I use a US engine manual for my european 420, and I have had no problems.
As far as CDROMS....it is all a matter of preference. Craig likes 'em, I don't Personally I like to have the manual sitting in my engine compartment or where ever else I am working on the car. So unless you have a laptop you can set right next to your car, the only thing you could do is print the stuff out....and I'm sure that would turn into a real PITA after a while. So neither is the decided winner here...all preference. Besides, having 3 or 4 phone book sized service manuals sitting on a shelf impresses people!!
