190 16V Fuse number 10 blowing

Oh god I hate these problems..

After fixing my air flow meter I have a fuse thats constantly blowing. Actually it was blowing before I replaced the meter, just less frequently.

Fuse 10 according to my owners manual is supposed to control the "Electromagnetic Clutch engine fan" (bloody great that), "washer nozzle heater", "tachometer", "adjustable heated outside mirrors", "outside temperature gauge", "switch over valve idle stabilization automatic transmission"...

Hey! Not many things to check, I think I'll just disassemble the entire car...

But seriously, has anyone else had this problem and could perhaps suggest the potential culprit? Ppplease?

The fuse blows the second the ignition is switched on.

A couple of months ago I had a bit of water ingress into the cars interior thanks to a faulty sunroof seal and the local car wash. Got into the gearstick area near the electric window switches etc. The heated seats didn't work for a few days then they started up ok again. I don't think this is related though as they aren't part of that circuit from what I can see. The mirror switch is there of course...

Better start praying to the dark lord Lucas, and I thought German cars didn't have electrical problems. LOL

Cheers,
Neil

One question

Did you put the correct size of fuse in there?

time for a wiring diagram

Sounds like it's time for a wiring diagram. you're gonna need to start disconnecting these different components and find at what point the fuse no longer blows. You had better get yourself a handful of these fuses to use for your troubleshooting. By all means, don't upgrade the fuse to larger amperage fuses. I just found that I had a couple 16A fuses in locations that were supposed to be 8A. Luckily the P.O. just put them in cuz he needed a fuse and the 16A was handy.

Good luck

Check your clutch fan...

Hi Neil

I was chasing a short in this circuit for weeks (check my posts a couple of months back).

Same symptoms, turning the key to II would fry fuse #10.

Finally, the problem was traced to a fried electromagnetic clutch.

Obviously, at this moment, your clutch fan, tach, etc aren't working.

At the front of the engine, you should see a 2 or 3 prong round sensor with a connector. This sensor should be the nearest one to the front of the engine and is the temp sensor for the fan clutch.

Pull the connector off, swap the fuse (#10), restart and see if the fuse blows. If it doesn't, it's the fan clutch. Cheap part, 20-30mins labour.

Good luck and let us know your results for the benefit of other members.

Cheers.
