When I do this job I just remove the 5mm allens that hold the fan to the clutch, remove the fan and leave the fan clutch on.

leaking water pump Euro C180 1994

Mine went at 189,000kms last year. Apparently the seal was leaking and it sent sprays of coolant all over the front engine area including the hood. The fan and spinning drive belt caused all this muck up. Had to change the whole pump, drive belt and the tensioner according to the tech although I personally felt that a new seal on the pump would have been sufficient if that could be done. It pays to be an expert on car parts and whether they are recyclable or junk. With labour and such, it came out to be around A$750 or more, I cannot remember the exact total. Maybe they only resealed it and changed only the belt(for sure) and maybe reinstalled the old tensioner, I don't know. I keep my engine very clean, spotless. The old parts look like new also.
