W140 replace wiper transmission help
 

Well, I need a new windshield wiper transmission for the S320 (Driver's side mono(monster) wiper). Dealer quoted me $CDN1229.00 for the assembly plus 3.8 hours to install! Yikes! Total after tax more than $CDN1600.00, about $USD 1100.00

So, Phil at PartsShop found me a used assembly for considerably less money - now I have to install it myself...

Can anyone give me some help/pointers etc. on what steps I need to do to get the old one out and the new one in???

I know this is going to be a project for me, but I am willing to tackle it. I have a couple weeks before the assembly arrives in which to get my gameplan together. I've previously done the rear brakes on this car, and have poked around a bit under the hood...so I know my way around somewhat.

I haven't done this myself but it dosen't seems that hard when I got to my motor.

Have you replaced your A/C filter before? If so you are almost there. You have to remove that BIG plastic cover at the cabin side of the engine bay, I think its called "louver"??, takes 5 screws. DO NOT remove the small screws, just the BIG screws.

Once screws out, remove the 2 vacum connector, try lifting the plastic up a little, DO NOT FORCE IT OUT, than remove a small sensor attached to a harness on the opposite side. Opposite side being opposite to the cacum connector.

Once the 2 vacum and the sensor is removed, you can take the BIG plastic ant put it somethere. Be careful not to force anything to break.

Once u are there, i think its rather easy. I haven't gone beyond but I am sure u can work it our if u get to there far... looks easy anyway..

This or the last issue of the star addressed on how to replace the activated charcoal filter in a 140 body, this reqired removing & replacing the wiper assembly (everything). I would attach but I dont have a flat bed scanner, maybe some other good person could do it.
BTW if you go that far change the filter as long as you have removed everything

I'd really appreciate it if someone could scan and post the article you mention from The Star.

Haven't replaced the A/C filter before (only had this car for 1 year), but you're right - might as well while I'm in there. Any thoughts on the part number?

depending if you have the charcoal filter or not, your car have either 2 or 3 filters for the A/C.

1 is under the passenger dash. Very cheap and very easy to replace. Its above the passenger foot.

1 is the Charcoal pre-filter. Its located right before the blower motor and its location is how I explained earlier.

The last one if oyu have, is located in the middle of the firewall where wiper needs to be removed.

Its hard to give you part numbers because if you have Charcoal filter, the pre-filter will be different to the ones where Charcoal filter does not exist. Check if you have charcoal filter first.

The article is in the Jan Feb issue of the star, and there are Three filters. The charcoal should be changed every 75K or four years, the dust filters every 45 or two years. I guess you need a vacum source to collapse the seal in order to get this filter out. The article claims the filters are $500 and it took 3hrs to remove the wiper assy and change the one filter. I shure hope some one can scan the article for you it shows it in good detail. I did go to the MBstar and it is not available on line!

when you say the "star", is this some sort of online facility offered by MB? How do you access it? Is it via a web site? If so, can you give the address?

Also when u said "vacum source to collapse the seal", I believe you are refering to changing the charcoal filter and not the pre-filter. Correct? As far as I know, you can just change the pre-filter without using any vacum tools.

The interior filter is just a thin piece of foam rubber, very easy!
The air filter is in the engine compartment in the top, also easy!
