Unhappy '95 E320 (W124) Gas Mileage

My 1995 E320 Sedan gets about 13mpg. Should I be worried? I do about 70% City/30% Highway Driving. My fuel filter has been changed recently. I have always used Chevron Premium, noted the cleanest gas in my area. Is there anything else I can do to increase my gas mileage? Thanks.

13 seems very low

Wow, 13 mpg sounds very low. I am pretty sure that I get 20 to 25 mpg. Even when all I do is drive the very short trips to work at low speed, I get about 20 mpg. When I drive the highway on a trip for vacation, I always get 25 mpg. I only have 70K miles, but it seems like there must be something affecting your mileage.

tdhenning,

Check your fuel pressure, if it's too high the fuel consumption will be high with no other obvious symptoms.

Your mileage is much too low.
I get at least 20 mpg in city driving with a V8 ...

Have you checked the usual suspects, like air cleaner, plugs, cap/rotor?

td, I've got 164k miles on my 95 E320 and have never gotten below 20mpg with it, no matter how hard I drive (which is pretty hard). I usually get close to 30 on the highway regardless of temp. or whether the A/C is on or not. So I would say you most certainly have something wrong.

Do you know how to run the codes with the built in LED? I think Paul may be on to something when he mentions fuel pressure, and if it's too high then a code should be stored. That's the first thing I would recommend before you go tearing into anything or even getting gas on your hands, let the car tell you what's wrong with it.

You didn't mention how it runs, is it running "normally" i.e. smooth and without drama or is it hard to start and running rough?

I am averaging about 22.5 mpg in mixed driving.

I'd check your O2 sensor.. It's almost always the reason for a dramatic drop in gas mileage...

Is your Check Engine light on?

Average should be from 20-24 MPG

Can you smell gas at start up or around the car?

In addition to the above good advice, check the engine wiring harness (use the search for wiring harness on this site). After I had a new harness, new plugs and a tune up, my mileage went from 15 to 20 in town. Ed

Type multimeter in the search and you will get a lot of usefull information about how to test the various systems of your car. Also, the DIY tab at the top of the screen has some information as well
