rpm 190e 60mph

hey folks, I was wondering what rpm's people who have a car similar to mine run at when travelling 60mph. Reason I ask is I thought this was a four gear tranny and I'm at about 3k rpm at 60 never really having felt a third shift. Don't get to do any highway driving with the cah, wondering if it shifts at a higher speed, or if this sounds odd to people.

Thanks,
CDT

The axle ratio is 3.27:1, and the 185/65R-15 tires are speced at 849 revs/mile.

For a 1:1 top gear the RPM at 60 is:

3.27 x 849 = 2776

I can't recall if the 190 auto had a lockup converter. If not, converter slippage would increase revs a bit (maybe up to three percent) from the computed number above.

Different revs/mile tires will not affect the speedometer/tachometer relationship. They will just affect speedometer error.

The 190s are geared fairly short because both the 2.3 and 2.6 have modest torque relative to the weight of the car, however, the five speed models have a 0.80:1 fifth gear with the same axle ratio, so at highway speed the revs are 20 percent less than with the automatic for more relaxed cruising and better fuel economy.

This comes up quite frequently. Your automatic is a 4-speed. It simply starts in 2nd gear.

To test your first gear, at a standing stop, mash the gas pedal to the floor and hang on. It will pause just slightly then downshift and leap all at once.

The 2.3, with the ratios Duke has stated, has sufficient torque to economize with starting in 2nd gear.

You can also, from a standing start, pull the gear selector into the lowest gear and it will start in 1st.

BTW, approximately 60mph and 3,000 rpm sounds right. There are multiple threads on this topic: 190E RPMs and MPHs

Funny, I was wondering about the same thing (rpms) yesterday as I was running up the New York State Thruway. My 190e was revving at 3k while doing 60. I do not remember what it was at 75 or 85, just that it pulled strongly from 60 - 85.
