Oil starvation after filter change

Im about to do the oil/filter for the 1st time on a 1996 W202 with a 2.5 5cyl diesel. On previous cars ive always filled the new filter with oil before I fitted it, to speed up the build up of oil pressure. It doesnt look possible to do this on the 605 engine as the filter sits pointing up. If I cant pre-fill the filter, is it worth draining the oil with the engine cold, refilling with fresh oil, then turning the engine over on the starter without waiting for the glow plugs to heat?. The idea being to get oil pressure up before the engine starts. Am I being super careful, or is this a reasonable precaution?.
