Car Goes Clunk
 

Hello:

I have a 190E 2.6, 1993 with 125K miles. It is running fine but I am a perfectionist and want to make sure all is well. Here is my issue: i hear a clunk sound when I move the selector from park to drive. Now, this only happen if I allow the car to roll back (little roll) when I park it. The sound is not there if I keep the brake pedal depressed, engage the parking brakes, move the selector to park and turn the car off. What could be causing this?

I think the fisrt question that should be asked is: should my car roll back -little roll?

Note that I replaced the front and rear flex disk at 99k and visual inspection with some pulling/pushing shows both of them are fine.

I think that's fine. When you stop in park and it rolls to it's 'stoppers' (better word??), there will be a little tension in the tranny/drivetrain, which is realised when you come out of park. When using handbrake, the brake operates directly at the wheel so there's little tension.

I'm assuming it clunks as you go from P to 'N', not only as you go into 'D'?

It does go clunk when I put it into N. To me it is a horrible sound and I want to make sure I am not damaging the tranny/drivetrain or anything else.

Does your ride do the same thing?

My solution...at least i think it is...
 

I experience the same thing with my 190e.

I've seen this topic discussed in an earlier post.

Someone advised to engage the parking brake first, then shift to P.When u shift from P, no more clunk.

Tried it and it really works, so now I swear by it...

Yes, you should engage the Parking Brake (e-brake) before putting the transmission in P. The clunk is pretty normal, mine does it. I suspect Mercedes may even say somewhere that you should apply the Parking Brake first.

There's simply less tension being release when you take it off, that way, so hardly any clunk.
