2 190E questions: No tach/ Temp & Fuse box cover

Suddenly the 190E's tach and outside temperature readout do not work. Everyhting else works. Is this possibly a bad connection behind the gauge cluster?

Second, when checking the fuses, I found myself unable to remove the fuse box cover completely. I can of course get the front open but how does the rear come off? I tried to move the rear wire holding it but doesn't budge. Any suggestions? It is probably so obvious ....

we must have had 190's made by the same person or something... cracked dash... I also have problems with the LCD display on the cluster; no advice. I just either ignore it or try to imagine what it would be like if it was +88.8 C. As for the fuse cover, I could never figure out how to get mine off completely what you are doing with the front flap is what I have done and I was able to replace all the fuses with the front cracked open a bit. yeah it wasn't perfect but... you can get things in and out with that front cracked open, have you tried already?
I amost shouldn't post, as this might be the most unhelpful post to date. But no I will, you are not alone with these questions others have the same problems (and have to find half ass solutions to them until others chime in).

Thanks for the reply. If nothing more it bumps the post up a bit.

If I find the answers I will be sure and forward them off to you. The tach & outside temp both quit at the same time. I was accelerating to merge on to a highway and the tach just fell to 0. Makes me curious.

I realize in reflection that the almost comical "pulling" of the dash and heater/AC unit was very much easier because so much of the original car was dismantled. There wasn't a steering wheel, no ignition switch or steering column etc. Really, the ideal way to get to those parts ..... well except being inside a dumpster!

OK with a little searching with the right words I found:

"There is a U-shaped clamp on the rear of the fuse box lid. Press the U together at the absolute rear and lift the lid up. The ends of the U are clamped in the plastic of the fuse box and function as the rotation axle.

Push the U together, lift the rear of the lid and take it off completely..."

had to go out to the car to try it. pushed and pushed at the back but couldn't get it off then slipped my key (for lack of a better lever here at work) sort of inbetween and under the front of the U to get it away from the anchor in the very front of the U piece (closest to front of car on top of fuse box blue plastic piece holds front of U down) yeah anyway popped the U off squeezed the back and I was in business. Thanks for the heads up, worked like a charm once I fured out how to release the front of the U. Hey if all else fails just use chopsticks to swap the fuses out!

chopsticks! Funny! If am resorting to removing and replacing fuses in a Mercedes (they are akward) with chopsticks .... just send me off to a funny farm!

the number 10 fuse controlls all the things wrong wit your car

i had the same problem and checked the wirnig and i had an open calbe and it was touching the intake mainfold causing a short cut, fixed it , put a new fuse in and thats it.

This is getting interesting ... the only two items that do not work are the outside air temperature and the tach. Hmmmm.....

what???? the fan isnt supposed to be working and the right hand electric mirror shouldnt work either, is the fuse blown??

You are correct! I didn't even try the right-hand mirror.

I went out, put another fuse in and it popped right away. So .... now where do I start?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is the electric engine fan wiring the most likely culprit?

ok try this, follow the wires from the fan wiring in front of the block at the middle there should be like a connector like a two plugs well in my car the cable on one of the sides of the plug was peeled so when it touched ground (intake mainfold) the fuse blew, just check all three wires all the way to the fuse box, an easier way is to just move pull or whatever the cables and put the fuse back in and put the car in start if the problem is cured its the cable if it doesnt check the wires anyway

OK I removed both connectors on the most forward sensor on the engine block. The fuse does not blow now.

Does this mean it is the electro magnetic engine fan or the sensor?

Had the same issue with my 190e.

In my case, it was the electromagentic clutch.

The sensor does not cause a short coz it is only a switch that closes when the temp. reaches like 107 deg C or something (i forgot) and supplies 12V to the electromagnetic clutch.

You can test by applying 12V to the wire going to the clutch.The ground for the clutch is already connected somewhere below the air cleaner housing.

The clutch should CLICK upon applying 12V.If it doesn't, it's fried, and that causes fuse #10 to blow when it is connected back to the circuit.

If i remember correctly, it blows as soon as you turn the key.

You could look at my earlier posts in which I was hunting like crazy for the short, which turned out to be the clutch.
