If u look at my earlier post (in which you questioned on the conclusion of the problem), you will find a detailed account of how i tested the whole setup. I even tested the wire w/connector between the sensor and the magnetic clutch for a short (if this is faulty, you can get a repalcement wire w/connector for the clutch - it's a standard Merc part).

OK, I hooked up a hot lead to the wire going to the fan and it makes a definite clink and locks-up. So it works..... but does this mean I have another problem such as the wires going to the sensor? If so where do they come from?

Ok.

There is a hot wire going into the clutch temp sensor and a wire that goes to the clutch from the sensor.

Bypass the sensor by temporarily connecting these 2 wires together.

If the clutch works (and of course fuse #10 is intact), it's the sensor that's bad.

If the fuse blows, then it is a short in the circuit from the sensor going back to the fusebox.More on that if this is the case.

Give it a go.If it's indeed the sensor, it's a cheap part.

I bridged the relay and the fan clinked on, no fuse blew.

What is interesting is about a week or so ago I posted about the AC fan staying on all the time. I had disconnected it (it operates off the same relay). Interesting, as they say.

Ok off to the dealer tomorrow to get a new sensor.

I would have thought that the sensor would unlikely be faulty becoz of it's role in the circuit.

Anyway, taking the steps that we did, we isolated each part of the circuit until we conclusively determined the bad portion of it; which in this case is the sensor.

Sorry to jump in here, but the fuse issue ( I hate that term-"issue") makes me ask this:
What do you guys think about using the next size larger fuse to replace one that burns out?

Personally, I prefer not too.

Coz I've seen stuff get damaged (not in my 190e) as a result.

By doing so, you are allowing a higher current (than rated for the device) to pass thru'.

The device will possibly burn out due to the heat.

It is always good to find the source of the higher current draw, especially when there are more than one device in the circuit (like in a Merc).

Just my views...

As a follow up- The new sensor cured the problem: The #10 fuse no longer blows, the tach, right-hand outside mirror and the outside temp gauge all work, the electromagnetic clutch works AND the original problem .... the AC radiator fan no longer stays on all the time.
