I saw on another website somewhere that a person can safely "rot" a radiator themselves by using a couple of bottles of CLR from the grocery store. Has anyone done this and is it really safe???

Mercedes offers a product called citric acid powder that will clean out all of the "crud" from the cooling system.

Saaay,..... How much powder do you use? Reason I ask is my Spiceguy carries citric acid, and I bet he has a decent price too. Is it pure citric acid, or are there other "things" in there? ...just wondering while I wait for the return of my 300. That reminds me...the other day I noticed a dark red, somewhat sticky substance on the engine side of the radiator....could this be watter wetter seeping through a before unknown pinhole? Or is it the remains of some juicy florida bug? thanks for your indulgence! -Larry ------------------ 03/83 300D 07/73 280 |

Larry D. -- If the bottom of your radiator has an automatic transmission cooler, you are probably looking at ATF fluid leak.

Thanks Fred, but my leak comes from the very top of the radiator; closer examination today revealed the leak to be coming from the very top of the little "tube" just as it goes into the header...there was "stuff" globbed all around it. The discoloration is definately a rich deep red, and does look alot like fresh trans. fluid. Hmmmm ------------------ 03/83 300D 07/73 280 |
