Fuel Injector Replacement 88 TE
I am considering replacing the injectors on the TE due to a rough idle for 3-5 seconds on a cold start. I have read a bunch of the posts concerning presurizing new injectors before installing. Opinions seem to vary on whether it is necessary. What do the techs. out there do?

Have you replaced the check valve by the fuel pump? Have you tested the accumulator?

What's your milage? Befreo jumping into injectors I would at least do the fuel filter ($20) and check valve ($11) first. A rough idle could be lots of things. It'll cost $250-300 for new injectors and associated parts. I would run as many tests as possible to be sure that's your problem. There are lots of good diagnostic tips in the archives, its worth the read.

Thanks for the suggestions. The wagon has 167k on it. I replaced both the filter and the check valve in Feb. I have gone through the archives and read all I could on the rough idle subject (is there a 300E/TE out there w/o a rough idle?).
My situation is strictly on a cold start up. Fires right up but idles very rough for 2-5 seconds then smooths out. My guess is an injector is leaking down and flooding one cylinder. Injector cleaner does not help. Wires, plugs, rotor are all good/new. Replacing the injectors seems to be the next logical step. Still would like to hear from one of the Techs. on the pressurizing issue. Thanks, Ed C. |
The techs will likely tell you to get a shop manual and a proper gauge set so you can monitor system pressure and stop guessing.
Try this -- turn the key to run and leave it there for a few seconds until the pump stops. See if the engine stabilizes more quickly when you start. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD ... any takers at $1100? |

1. How is your fuel consumption? 2. Have you changed the injectors yet? I have the same car as yours and the same cold start rough idle (1-2 seconds) problem too. My fuel consumption is down to 18 mpg from 21-23 mpg. Except for the rough cold-start and high fuel consumption, the car runs fine. RV ----------- 92 300 TE 115K miles |
