Is this from my car?
Hi,
I have a 88 190e 2.3, and I have found this rubber piece, what looks like maybe a bushing, laying on my garage floor. I can't say for sure it is from my car because several of us use the garage. What I notice is the car sometimes catches cross winds, and sometimes likes to sway on the road without my permission. But it did this before I found this piece. I was looking under the car at the components under each wheel and I could not find anything missing. This part looks like it had a bolt running through it at some point, which is what worries me. I thought maybe someone would have seen this part and recognized it. Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Josh |

i can't see how that thing would just fall off without intention.it must be from someone else

Weird, since it looks like a suspension bushing. I would suggest not driving the car until you've made an under car inspection of all the front and rear suspension points.

Yes! Diffinitely a bushing from a suspension component. Could be from steering linkage, sway bar, control arm, or ? Inspect everything. Tod

Thanks everyone, I will try to leave work early today and put the car up on the ramps and see if I can find anything. My initial inspection revealed nothing obvious, or loose.

From the pics, it doesn't appear that there are any "breaks" on the bushing. That is, when installed, the bushing sat concentrically onto some type of suspension component.
With no fracture point visible on the bushing, it would be impossible for it to come off unless the shaft it was riding on gave out. So either you have a catastrophic failure on your hands, or the bushing came off another vehicle...

If it was something catestrophic, I would have noticed something by now right? There is no clucking or banging as there would be if something were loose.

Looks like a shock absorber bushing that has come off some car.

Don't all mercedes bushings come with a part number on them? I doubt this is off your car.

Having just completely rebuilt my 123. It looks like the sway bar bushing. I don't see how it would fall of the car. Mine required some manipulating to get them into the uppercontrol arm. The sequence had to be done just right or they would not go in. Have you had the suspension rebuilt at anytime? The mechanic could have dropped it in the engine compartment and it just now got loose.
Look at the front of the swaybar as it comes through the upper control arm. If the bolt came off than the front rubber bushing could come off. The picture below is of the 123 suspension. The attached picture shows the sway bar going into the UCA. Just to the right of the white shock cover and behind the upper control arm ball joint is where the sway bar attaches. I do not know of this is the setup on your 190. But Mercedes ususally builds things using the same philosophy. What is the dimension of the piece. Could it have come from the engine compartment? Dave

It looks to be 1 + 1/8th inches in diameter, and 3/4" wide. I can see no part number on it. And I have not had any suspension work done on the car. The only thing I notice is the car likes to sway on the highway sometimes. So from reading other posts this seems to be caused by the swaybar bushings. But I am not very experienced with the underside of the car, does anyone have a picture of a 190 swaybar and bushing location?
