W210 rough idle

I have developed a rough idle on my '00 W210. I thought it might be a fuel problem as I was putting regular unleaded the last 2-3 months, but have started using premium and it still idles rough. When you put it in neutral it smoothes out a bit.

I checked the archives and saw it could be the motor mounts, and nothing else.... the car has 60K miles....

I am going to check the motor mounts, after I check the archives. Any other ideas or start with that?

thanks

Which engine?

Take it to AutoZone let them read the codes (free). For more info search for OBD2 or ODBII

Spaces in sig so as not to screw up the SEARCH; every time someone searches for that MB they don't want my sig!

m112... Man, I was just at Autozone at lunch! Where is the plug in that car for them to check? You think they have to check a Mercedes? Worth a try...

Yes, that is part of the genius of the law that made OBD-II a requirement starting in 1996.

The diagnostic connector and the code numbers are universal. They are the same for every single car make sold in the U.S.

At 60K miles you might be due for a new fuel filter.

If your air filter is originial, I would replace it as well. Keep in mind that the brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years and the engine coolant every 3 years regardless of milage.

OBD II Trouble Codes & AutoZone

AutoZone CAN read the code and reset the check engine light (CEL) for free, but you have to tell them the magic words "OBD two" because for some reason they always think that they cannot read MB codes. Every time I have gone there they end up reading out just fine. The connector is above the driver's feet below the steering wheel on most cars (since 1996). Also, last time the guy thought that the code wouldn't reset but when he disconnected the scan tool it had reset the CEL. I bought a code reader for $140 they also sell them at AZone and Advanced for $150.

here is a link to the Actron site this is the one they sell at the Zone; it also has a link to generic OBD codes (this info comes with the code reader too).

can I read the fault codes in my car with this tool and possibly fix my eough running car?
It is 97 E320 RUNNING VERY ROUGH about 13,000.00 miles on it ( it was in an accident but now ready to drive but can not get it to run smoothly and when pressing the accelerator it backfires and or stalls.
Thanks

MareKW,
yes any OBD2 code reader will show most of the ENGINE fault codes on your '97 which should point you in the general direction to diagnose your problem. Your check engine light needs to be on to indicate a code is stored. Also do not forget the basics - plugs and connectors and look for vacuum leaks.
Take it to autozone or advanced, they will read your codes and then you can search these forums for the specific faults, it's a start and it is free. Or just buy the reader $140 and save yourself future trips and amaze your friends when their check engine lights come on.
good luck, keep us posted!
