'97 C230 - Transmission Renewal

'97 C230, 150K miles. Owner never changed transmission fluid... said salesman told her it was lifetime fluid.... and now tranny only works in second gear and reverse. Dealer checked fault codes, said the tranny was "bad" and quoted $4500+ for rebuilding it. A fluid and filter change only resulted in a temporary improvement... fluid drained was black but free of particulates.

Wouldn't a M-B factory rebuild be cheaper? How many hours are required for installing a factory rebuilt transmission? Will a M-B HHT be required for version coding or resetting the adaptation?

Does a '97 C230 require a new AT control unit when installing a factory rebuilt transmission? The dealer originally said no but now says it does.

Ok, there are about 12 "updates" for both the .6 valvebodys and ETC.6 control units. They have to match or it simply wont work right.

$4500 really isnt too bad as the reman unit lists for a tic over 3K and the .6 control unit is around $700 by itself. Labor is generally around 6 hours to replace. Keep in mind the reans dont come with converters either.
