300e, miss in motor , but only occasionaly
hello all, I have a problem with my 300 e, on two accasions, the last to-night, the motor develops a miss at low revs, stationary at lights etc, feels like when you accelerate its is being starved of fuel and wont pull. Once higher revs are reached it seems to level out. It appears that it may only happen after it has warmed up and it has only happend twice before.
I have put injector cleaner through on first occasion hoping it would solve problem. I have just started the car and gave it some revs and it all appears ok, but confidence in it has eroded some what. Perhaps sombody out there has some explanation for this problem. To night the motor stalled completly but I was able to restart it and nurse it back home. It has done 172 k and is in excellent condition through out, first sign of trouble with the car. All services done as required. thanks in advance. |
Resistor ends on your spark plug wires may be bad. Do a search for "resistor ends", grab a cup of coffee, and enjoy your reading.

300e,miss in motor but only occasionaly
further to my original post, car is 1988 300e if that should be of some assistance for answer to problem... I have also just been for a approximately 6 k drive and all is perfect, no miss, all correct, however that has happend before so the problem is most likely still there. When the problem arisers the car has no power at all, severe miss but as said before if you can get the revs up it still misses but at least you get going.

i agree with 95e320cab.
mine were changed this week at 140,000. 3 of 6 were broken. i shopped for best price, i got the bosch ones from parts shop. peter |
Ditto. Resistor ends.
|
Also, make sure your not running bosch platinum's. They have resistors in the plugs which would mean a double whammy! Also, check your coolant temp sensor, its located at the back of the head near the firewall. Mine actually vibrated nearly off so it was arcing a contact on and off. Good Luck!
|
Yeah, good point. Make sure your are running plain old Bosch copper core plugs, non-resistor.
The electrode in platinum plugs is too thin for these engines. |
problem has been solved........you were all correct, resistor on one plug was playing up, new lot ordered and will be fitted this week. thanks everybody for assistance.

Great news! Least expensive route possible. I recommend changing your plugs like Paul and Dr. Brandini say, too. Mine takes Bosch F8DC4. Don't let anyone sell you the "replacement" for those plugs. I did and got resistor plugs. Had to replace again.

There is nothing called "Resistor End" in FastLane.
Could someone tell me the correct name for it? |
I think it is the supressor cover, which they say is not available. I got mine at the dealer. There are two types. You will need three of each. They cost about $60 total.
|
I don't understand resistor ends, but I have an extra set of beru spark plug wires. If I change my wires will I have changed the resistor ends? Or are the ends separate pieces that go on top of the plugs? Thanks for the help.
|
The ends are separate pieces that go on top of the plugs.

Remember that original Mercedes wires are made of solid copper, and rarely, if ever, go bad. There is no replacement interval for wires.
Aftermarket wires are not recommended because they are not solid copper. They are a silicone / copper blend and don't have the same service life. The only good thing about aftermarket wires is that they are cheap. If you have a miss problem, it is almost always a bad plug, a plug or plugs that have too wide of a gap, or a bad plug wire boot or resistor end. |
