Question Check Engine light comes on? @ 120k, 600 sel

Should I be concerned when my "check engine" light comes on at just over 120,000 miles? How can I turn off the check engine light on my 1992 600 sel? thanks in advance for your help, mike 602 616 2974

ummm...the "check engine" light means something is not functioning properly with the mechanics of your car, i.e. oxygen sensor, etc...it is not a "maintenance light"...you do not want it turned off until you have had the car looked at by a mechanic...

The check engine light only illuminates if there is a fault with any systems relating to smog emissions.

From experience on check engine light problems from posts on this board, it is most likely an O2 sensor or an EGR issue.

Take it to a dealer or an indpendent and get the codes scanned.

Your car [ 140.057 ] has analog - flash code system that is easily DIYer accessed..

There are 60 codes that will bring on a CE lamp code and the fault/s that have tripped yours are stored in the Diagnostic Module .
On Ca. vehicles , there is a sw/led to access, on Fed , you make a simple led tool [ archives] ..

The codes and pin # on the DM connector to access these is here [ on page 37]
Also read the intro on code access....

http://www.autolib.diakom.ru:8000/CARS2/pribor/cs1000/manual/cs1000_mb.pdf

Don't do anything until you get the codes .. the DM is the brain that put the CE lamp ON and it is the brain that will tell you why it did so...
