Awful noise....help!!

Today I actually drove my 126 for the first time in a while (more than just up and down the road). Other than the rough idle, which has not been cured (fuel injectors/system is next on my list), everything seemed ok. UNTIL....I decided to start it in first gear and give it a little harder of a launch. Now...I didn't floor it, I didn't powerbrake it or anything stupid. I just started it in first and started out "briskly". When I did this the car made this horrendous clanking and screeching type noise. Let me see if I can recreate it :) "Clank-clank-clank-cl-aa-aaa-aaaa-aaank" It was quite loud. I THINK it came from the front of the car...but I guess it could have come from anywhere. Needless to say I'm kinda worried here!

Here is what I have done since I last drove it: Timing chain/guides, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, engine mounts and shocks, suspension shocks, new exhaust...and obviously fluids.

Again, it only does it when I accelerated pretty hard from a stop in 1st. Any insight into this would b e greatly appreciated!!

This only happened that one time, or you have been able to repeat it again and again consistently?

DuckMuck guesses "bye bye" transmission...

Been able to repeat it consistently.

Look at the fan and shoud, sounds like it got the shoud.

Hey mbtjc, which part of missouri are you from?

mbtjc 05-16-2003 04:58 PM

But would the fan shroud make a metallic clanking noise? I called a friend of mine and he said it might be the new exhaust. I said that when the motor torques so much off a hard launch, that somewhere the exhaust hits something. Anyone agree with this?

Chris....Springfield, go to school in Kirksville. Both 3 hours from STL.

Yeah ok, i see what your saying now.

Cool, and thats about.....4hours from the college i'm going to next year, heading to Warrensburg, MO

My bet would be with Joe P. Either the fan/shroud clearance or the radiator/fan clearance.

When you changed the motor mounts, did you adjust the fan shroud to fan blade clearance all around? Tip of blade to top of shroud should be approx 20 mm, bottom should be 15 mm, and both sides (left and right) should be about even. Also, the clearance between the radiator and blades should be 20 mm.

Look closely to see if there has been any contact, all the way around pn the shroud, and on the radiator.

Thank you Joe and Steve!! Went out and checked it, and sure enough, there was hardly any space between the top of the fan and the shroud. I adjusted it, to where now there is plenty of space. I haven't driven it yet, but judging from the scrape marks on the fan blades...that was the problem! I had the shroud off, and I guess I just wasn't thinking about clearance when I put it back on.

Thanks again! :D
