It could be the hydrolic insert in a valve lifter. Easy to change, not expensive.

Rob do you have a part number??
thanks

Well, it couldn't be on the 16V, because they had solid tappets, not hydraulic... The noise could be anything, but I have seen the lower timing chain rails come apart. Beware on this!!

Is the noise all the time?, or is it worse when it is hot? When did you last check your valve clearances? If they are too big as the engine warms then she will make a tapping noise.

If you don't know how to check them, email back and I let you know how to do it?

How many miles on your car?

OK If you do not have the 201 cd rom, you should get it. In detail it explains how to check the valve gaps.

Send me your email address and I will send you a copy of the camshaft sprocket upgrade and details on checking the valvegaps.
