cat. smell when hot, gas milage

I smell the cat. converter smell when I shut it off, car is 86 300 e with 115000 miles, I just got the car a couple of months ago, its very different from my diesel in some ways. changed plugs wires dist cap and rotor, fuel filter, plugs looked real dirty with lots of build up, cap was pretty burned but milage did not change, getting 18 to 20 around town and road, also using a quart of oil every 3 tanks of gas, car only driven 1500 miles in the last year before I bought it

The comsumption of oil is common in this model...

specially in high mile cars. Replacement of seals may help with you oil usage but, may be it is too late for the cat. You may have a plugged cat.:D
Do a search and good luck!

timing chain

my 86 has 115000 and uses oil so I will do valve seals should I replace timing chain also since I am there?

What's a cat smell like? Tuna? har,har

If ya mean a sulpher smell, thats not the cat, a cat is platinum, some palladium, both noble metals, which have no smell and rhodium, another metal.
Sulpher smell comes from crappy gas with high sulpher content, which will in time destroy the cat substrate.

timing chain

ok so forget about the smell, it runs smooth and idles good just did tune up and old plugs were pretty dirty, should the cat. need replacement with only 115000 miles? I can understand the valve seal after all it is 17 years old, should I do the chain since I am in there? thanks

The only function of the cat is to remove pollutants from the exhaust.
At 115K, chances are it is approaching the end of its effective life.

If you are in an area that has emissions testing, the test may determine if it is functioning.

If you are not in an area that e-tests, then replacing the cat ( unless you are concerned about air pollution ) is an option.

the other part of the question was should the timing chain be changed out with 115000 and what is normal for the gas milage, thanks, I was hoping the milage was closer to my old 300d turbo
