M103 guide rail slide pin

This is my third MB head R&R and I hate the slide pins more and more. On the M103, there isn't a solid face at the head of the slide pin to allow the stacked washers method to work (and I've saved up a bunch of injector heat shields, too). My makeshift slide hammer (long bolt, big impact socket) isn't doing it. Any ideas before I fabricate a bridge so I can use stacked washers against the head?

Thanks,

I've never gotten a makeshift slide hammer to work for me. Fortunately the frame of the pitman arm puller I have is just the right size to use as a bridge on which to use the stacked washers methods of extracting the pin. It was so easy that I'm cursing myself for wasting time with a slide hammer.

can you guys give any more details on this stacked washer technique? I saw the slide hammer do the trick, but since I'm planning on pulling off the timing cover from my w201, a good way to get these pins out would be very helpful.

The trick is to stack washers between a strong grade bolt and the pin. You add washers so the bolt doesn't bottom inside the pin, or in the case of the M103, it doesn't go through since the far end is open. Turn the bolt and it extracts the pin. The washers need a strong surface to resist them. In the M103, the washers would bear on the plastic guide rail and probably crack it so I had to find something to use as a bridge so the solid surface of the head resists the washers.
