85 190 sunroof repair
hey folks, so its too rainy to paint so I have switched to other ultramasculine work. I have done a search on this and gotten a little help but need a bit more to posibly repair the sunroof on an 85 190e 2.3. As the second owner for a year this sunroof has never worked for me. don't know how long it has been broken for. If I push the button on the dash I can hear the motor turning at least. So I was able to pop the liner out without any trouble and I could use some help. A: the gold clip holding the cable to the black cross beam is mangled. the clip is missing a screw and is warped, basically twisted 90 degrees. B: when I hit the button the cable will go back or forward a bit. C. the cable does not appear to be attached to anything other than the cross beam. Here are the questions: Uh, can I fix it, no can I even figure out what is wrong, no can I put it back together if I do too much more? No that's not the spirit, Is the cable supposed to be connected to anything other than the cross beam? Should pushing or pulling the black cross beam open the sunroof. If so that's where I have to start as no gentle pressure on the sunroof crossbeam opens it. Where exactly in the trunk is the motor, looking into the trunk is it on the left with the antenna or to the right of the gas tank? Isn't there a way to manually open it from teh trunk and how is this accomplished. My guess is that the sunroof hasn't been opened in years and its too much for the motor to do. Any insight would be appreciated.

190E sun roof problem
I have a similar problem with my sun roof. I hear the motor running, but no movement. How do I at least, remove the cloth cover to examine the inner mechanism? Any advise would be helpful. Marty.

ok as a follow up, the black cross bar that the cable is attached to must pull straight back, although I am a little unclear where either the second cable is or how the roof returns closed, cables are better at pulling than pushing aren't they... anyway the cross bar does move back slightly but I can't push it back enough to move the roof backwards. There must be a lock up front... I am sure that is the culprit (until someone tells me that there is no latch up front) the culprit must be a defective latch up front which seized. The motor turned so hard pulling that it bent the gold clip? cant move the roof back can only push the back down on one side at a time.
How do you remove unlatch mysterious lock or latch in the front of the roof which I believe both exists and is jammed. Questions still remain, how where do you manually operate from the trunk without an owners manual and tool kit. As to getting the fabric cover off of the bottom of the roof it was easy, took a flat head pushed it in between the fabric and metal and used the screwdriver as a lever to pry the two apart. This came from a search under 190 sunroof. cdt

I can help with some of your questions:
-The sunroof motor is located on the left-hand forward side of the trunk as you look inside -The sunroof can be closed and opened manually. If you look on the above mentioned location, you should see a cap. Pry the cap off and underneath a bolt. There is a tool that fits this, if I recalled correctly in your tool kit that came with the car (or use a regular socket etc) It will allow you to move the roof panel by hand. Haasman

Ther isn't a lock in the front of the roof. Have you got the slide and tilt sunroof or just slide version?
On the slide/til version the only this that locks the sunroof to closed position is the angles themself. They are supposed to be pulled back with the cable. When pulled they lenghten and the rear of the sunroof "falls" down. This should be done at the same time at both sides. There is only one cable that do all the work. If this is broken, you cannot open the sunroof with a hexagon socket as described in the users manual. As Haasman stated, you don't need a special tool to open it manually.

the cable is not broken yet although it has bent the clip. The sunroof is a slide tilt version, the back drops down an inch or two and then the roof slides back. what might be the reason for only one side dropping down, what I mean is why doesn't that black cross bar that the cable is attached to slide back when I push it with my hand? it should go back pretty smoothly correct?
thanks for the help everyone. cdt

Sound like a the angle is jammed. Is both attached to the black cross bar? If so I would suspect a crushed angel but let see once you get it opened. Try to help the angle that doesn't move. It should be firm but not jammed.
What happens when you run the motor? Does the cable move at all? Try to help it by pushing cross bar backwards..once angels drop down the roof should move quite smooth. If not maybe the rail are soaked in old grease(wrong kind of grease.)

190dee I think I am not explaining what is happening effectively. Your response was somethign like:Is both attached to the black cross bar? If so I would suspect a crushed angel but let see once you get it opened. Try to help the angle that doesn't move.
Yes both are attached to the cross bar. but you can only push on one side of the bar at a time to lower either but not both back corners of the roof. I am going to try to give it a more forcefull-but gentle- nudge when I get home with some help. So, its really like the front of the roof won't let go and so there is only enough wiggle room for one corner to drop in the back at a time. but both have the ability to drop if you push on the cross bar on that side you can get one corner to drop. but if you try to push the bar staight back neither will go down and you'll end up bending the cross bar before anything moves. but the back corners are not really the problem I think. Maybe I can wedge a little something in there to get it started.... keep the advice coming and thanks!! Thinking about this more, I would be willing to bet serious money that the previous owner was unlucky and this thing broke on him then he went into the trunk and tried to back it out by hand and broke the screw and golden clip... something to think about cdt

so tried last night unsucessfully to pry the front of the roof away from the roof of the car with a 12'' putty knife... didn't work, but gave it a gentle nudge to be sure. There really must be some sort of latch up front that has to be disengaged for the front to come back once the back is down. Any more suggestions of things to try?

I would think there would be a site out there for the removal but I've done several searches in the past for me w124 and didn't find any.
I have the same prob with my sunroof where I want to take the roof liner etc apart and change the components. The mechanism would be simliar on the 190 and 124 I am assuming. if anyone has a site like that please post the url..
