coolant light dim
 

the coolant light is very dim while driving .............. the levels correct
help

There is no virtue in terseness - the more information the better. For starters, what car?

This is what I would do:

-Turn the key to on and verify that the light in the dash illuminates properly, like all the other lights.

- Remove the electrical connector to the coolant sensor and bridge the wires. Does the coolant light come on? Is it illuminated brightly as per the test above?

If so then you have a short that is providing electricity. Trace the wires and look for the source.

The coolant level sensor is known to cause problems like this as it ages.

This is primarily due to corrosion at the terminal prongs.

When it's dim like that, a thorough terminal cleaning should fix the problem.

Try some electrical contact cleaner and a stiff brush. Should solve your problem. ;)

when I turn the key on everything illuminates properly............. it is just very very dim while driving at night........... I can not really see it during the day

I am sure that it is coolant level senor. I had the same problem on my 1995 E420. coolant level sensor is located on side of coolant reserviour. If you disconnect the sensor and see if the light goes away. u may also find some coolant leak or rust at the sensor. If you see coolant on terminal replace sensor. if you see rust then just clean the rust.

i too had same thing on 300e. took switch off , found it to be green and moist. this was bridging the contacts and causing the dim light.:)
