Overvoltage problem
hi
I replaced my voltage regulator a few MO. ago , just because I haven't done it in a while and the gauge was reading 12-13v, When I replaced it the gauge went up to 14 and stayed there , This afternoon I noticed the voltage gauge was reading 16-18v all day, and would bounce around 14-15 at idle, would this be the signs of a faulty regulator already? I have never had a overvoltage problem before, Although I like the power of the wiper now real fast!!! But i also blew a headlight out to? Thanks Dave 86 190e 16v |

Hi Dave, overcharging is a serious matter! Batteries boil over and sometimes EXPLODE due to this. Components without over-voltage protection can be damaged as well. Don't wait, fix it!

Today I got out the multimeter and measured the voltage to the battery it was 20.56volts, and the battery was boiling, I
blew both high beams switching them on a off, ouch!! I am glad I wasn't driving somewhere, I went down the street to the local alt,starer rebuilder and he gave me a new v. regulator (20.00$$) I installed it and I am getting a nice 14.5v now, I also checked the overvoltage relay it was fine? no blown fuse? I figured for sure that would have fried, while i was down there i replaced the A/c clucth too , that was all to easy after having the new one on the shelf for awhile thanks Dave 190e 2.3 16v Iroc replica 911 |

I am having the same symptoms as described above in this post, namely:
Overvoltage, causing a headlight to blow (luckily everything thus far appears operational, but I've grounded the car) Question: I replaced the voltage regulator about 6 months ago from one bought from fastlane, as I was having an "undervoltage problem" resulting in a dead battery. That problem still occurs and a voltimeter confirms this: Voltage will swing between 12-18 volts, depending on driving..at freeway speeds, it went to 18 and I blew out both high beam headlights (yikes!) Another faulty voltage regulator??? I plan to buy one from the dealer this time but could it be something else? Alternator=1 year old rebuilt from dealer. Starter about 5 years old.

it sounds like you are blowing the voltage reg, my
alt guy told me to feel and look at the copper busing in the alt if they are out of round or choppy it is turning on and off the reg ,then it blows after so many miles, make sure the reg is grounded inside of the alt, that is what my problem was |

Put original voltage regulator back in...worked for about a day and same thing wtih this one, surging voltage to 18 volts on acceleration.
The alternator is again 6 months-1yr old max. Should I just try another regulator? Defective parts? I can't see what I could possibly be doing wrong....installation looks pretty straight forward. Am I missing something?
