What engine oil for '98 SLK 230?

I have a '98 SLK 230 that will need an oil change soon and I would like to change(?) to an AMSOIL full synthetic but my car manual said to contact the dealer for his recommended viscosity. I would appreciate your opinion on what I should use. .

I have been running 0w-30 in my Porsche designed Ford v6 and it loves it. This is recommended for cars that use 5w-30 or 10w-30. I read somewhere that 15w-40 was a MB recomendation and if so, I would op for a 10w-40 unless I hear otherwise..

Oh I live in central ca and see temps below 20F in the winter and above 120F in the summer. Thanks for any help with this one..:p

Porsche designed a Ford engine? Where did you hear about that? I'm sincerely interested because it doesn't sound like something Ford would do.

This is the all aluminum V6 Ford DuraTec 2.5L.. It was designed by Porsche and then Cosworth designed the casting molds, finally Ford placed their badge on it. It is a very strong engine. Of course all this was done for Ford in Europe..They build cars for a totaly different market that do the Motor City Ford folks..

Thanks for the input on the oil, but I still don't know the spec for the SLK engine.. I'll brake down and call the dealer..

The safe bet is to use 0W-40 Mobil 1. Someone has said that Walmart is starting to carry it.

This is the oil that MB recommends for cars with the FSS system.

Talked to the dealer today and he uses Pennzoil Synthetic European Formulation 5W-40.. I think the AMSOIL 0W-40 should be okay.. Typically less of a wear factor than Mobile 1 or Pennzoil, but I'll check with AMSOIL to be sure.
