190e - What are these for?

While working on the 190 I noticed these brackets on both the left and right sides of the car.

My guess is for lifting the car?

I would not lift the car using those things. They look like bump stops but I don't see what hits them under any condition. Maybe auxiliary tie down eyes?

I was looking at them and also noticed at the bottom they are "rounded" like something is to be inserted into them? A rubber pad maybe?

Those wimpy tack welds to the frame tell me 'don't jack here.'

I still think it's some sort of hold down because the eyes forward of these loops aren't accessible through a hole in the US spec bumper. I don't know that they are in a Euro spec bumper but at least they'd be easier to feel for behind a Euro spec bumper.

Did someone set up your car to roll behind an RV?

No, it appears to be stock. Same paint etc.

Weird huh? Anybody have these on their 190?

Those are for towing the car with a strap, also for tying the car down durning shipment. There is also a loop at the rt rear for the same purpose.
That is why you have a removable tow-hook cover on the front bumper just in front of that hook on the right side.

wow, I saw these so many times and never thought about that

I bet they are used only once when the car ships from the factory since all the tow trucks and other transports have their own tie down systems.
